It starts with a conversation

A first chiropractic appointment usually begins with a conversation rather than treatment. The chiropractor will want to understand what brought you in — your symptoms, when they started, what makes them better or worse, and how they affect your daily life.
Your relevant health history also matters. That may include prior injuries, previous treatment or imaging, your general activity, and any goals you have for care. There's no need to prepare anything formal; just come ready to talk honestly about what's going on.

An appropriate assessment

After the conversation, the chiropractor may carry out an appropriate physical assessment. This is tailored to your concern and usually involves looking at how the relevant area moves, checking for tenderness, and assessing any related movements or reflexes.
The goal is to understand what may be contributing to your concern, so that any recommended next steps are considered in the context of your individual situation rather than applied generically.

Discussing findings and next steps

Once the assessment is complete, the chiropractor explains the relevant findings and, where appropriate, discusses suitable care options and next steps. This is also your opportunity to ask questions and share any preferences or concerns about treatment.
If care isn't appropriate — or if another form of evaluation would be more suitable — the chiropractor can let you know. The aim is to help you make an informed decision, not to assume that one approach fits everyone.

A few practical notes

Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy movement, and bring any relevant information such as a medication list, prior imaging reports, or insurance and claim details if applicable. If you're unsure what to bring, contact the clinic before your visit.
An appointment is also an assessment — it isn't a guarantee of a particular treatment or outcome. If anything is unclear, you're always welcome to ask.

A note on this article. This article is general and educational, not individualized medical advice. A first visit is an assessment, not a guaranteed treatment, and chiropractic care is not suitable for every person or concern. Confirm current fees and coverage before booking.
